Meet Catherine — Senior Recruiter in Taiwan

Hello, my name is Catherine. I’m a Senior Recruiter for Coupang Taiwan and I joined Coupang in May of 2023. I’m mainly in charge of recruiting for HR & business positions for both headquarters (HQ) and our Fulfillment Centers (FC).  Our team has grown significantly in the past few quarters, and we all recruit for different functions within the business. Since the beginning of the year, I started looking for members to join my team. We’re very diverse and a comprehensive team with members coming both from agency and in-house backgrounds. 

We'd like to hear more about your journey in Coupang. What attracted you the most? What experiences did you have before joining Coupang Taiwan?    

Before joining, my experiences came from agency background. I first started my career as a software headhunter then went on to work for a headhunting company that focused on Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) recruitment. My experiences include finance, FMCG, legal and sales, which is quite diverse. For me personally, I have always been interested and passionate about recruiting.  

Two years ago, I saw that Coupang was hiring recruiters for their talent acquisition team, and I was also interested in the online commerce industry. After interviewing for Coupang, it left me with a strong impression, everyone was professional. The recruiters carefully understood my background and showed respect during my interviews.  

Going to work in-house was a breakthrough that gave me growth in my career and as the company was under rapid growth at the time, I believed I would be a good asset to the company with my experiences. 

Tell us more about your work, what are some of the teams you are recruiting for? 

When I first joined, my focus was on Sales & Brand Management positions as those had an important headcount. To this day, the Brand Management team has seen exponential growth and I’m proud to have been part of it. I get a lot of sense of achievement when I see how far we have come. Nowadays, I’m hiring for HR functions within HQ and our FCs, these are all owned by me. Within our team, I’m also a mentor for our newest onboarded members. 

Some say Coupang is constantly hiring. Do you see it that way, or is it simply due to the company’s growth and need for diverse talent? 

Coupang is always growing and expanding, so naturally we need to hire more talents to build our teams. We are very diverse, and all come from different backgrounds. For example, for our Brand Management teams, talent is not only from online commerce background. We also hit the offline market with those whose careers are not exactly the same but who can come to Coupang and learn. When we look at talents, we don’t limit ourselves, we look beyond the online commerce industry and if they have strong negotiation skills and are willing to learn, they can come join us.  

How are you maintaining work-life balance at Coupang?     

To be honest in the past two years, I’ve had no issues. I even adopted two dogs since I joined Coupang. It made me feel motivated to work harder, we have pipelines of candidates to go through, and we follow our Leadership Principles. Interviewees are also our clients, so we build a model to work with them, fulfill their needs. If you finish your high priority tasks and have your own rhythm what works for you, work-life balance will be good. When our team is busy, we have transparent communication, so we know what to prioritize.   

Anything you'd like to share with those interested in career opportunities at Coupang?  

In terms of personality, I would say be motivated and don’t be afraid of change. Believe in Coupang and that your potential will be seen. At Coupang, I’m on an equal level of discussion with my manager, our opinions are respected from intake to debrief, we give input on candidate to Hiring Managers, and they welcome it.
