Driving market breakthroughs at Coupang: Kuan’s journey in building growth momentum

From navigating global enterprises to thriving in fast-paced startups, Kuan has consistently sought out environments where change happens fast—and where she can play a direct role in shaping outcomes.

Today, as a Brand Manager for Personal Care at Coupang Taiwan, she is at the center of one of the region’s most dynamic commerce ecosystems driving category strategy, unlocking growth opportunities, and building meaningful partnerships with global and local brands.

But for Kuan, growth has never been just about numbers. It’s about uncovering untapped potential and turning uncertainty into opportunity.

Finding the right environment: where impact meets speed

Before joining Coupang, Kuan built her career across both Fortune 500 companies and high-growth startups. While those experiences gave her a strong foundation in brand management and channel operations, they also shaped a critical question: “Can I directly influence business outcomes in a fast-changing market?”

Coupang provided the answer. What stood out immediately was not only the company’s scale, but its pace—how quickly decisions are made, how fast ideas turn into execution, and how much ownership individuals are given.

“At Coupang, you don’t just contribute to growth—you help define it,” Kuan explains. “You are constantly challenged to think differently, act faster, and take ownership of real results.” For her, joining Coupang was not just a career move. It was a decision to step into an environment where her impact could scale alongside the business.

Unlocking growth: Turning potential into breakthrough performance

One of the most defining moments in Kuan’s journey came when she took on a transformation project for a U.S. beauty brand. The brand already had strong product quality, but its growth potential on the platform remained largely unrealized. Visibility was limited, and the momentum needed to scale simply wasn’t there.

Rather than applying a fixed strategy, Kuan approached the challenge as a continuous learning process. She analyzed market data daily, examined pricing dynamics, tracked consumer feedback, and continuously refined the brand’s positioning and marketing rhythm. “I was constantly asking: What are we missing? What can we do better today than yesterday?” Through this iterative approach, the brand began to gain traction. Within a short period of time, it achieved rapid growth and successfully entered the top five in its category.

For Kuan, this was more than a successful project. It was proof of what is possible within Coupang’s ecosystem. “When the direction is right and resources are aligned, growth can accelerate in ways that are hard to imagine elsewhere,” she reflects.

Evolving the role: from procurement to category ownership

At Coupang, the role of a Brand Manager goes far beyond traditional sourcing or vendor management. For Kuan, it represents a fundamental shift—from being a buyer to becoming a category owner. This means identifying market gaps, shaping long-term category strategy, and building sustainable growth through strong partnerships.

“The real challenge is not just selling more,” she explains. “It’s about finding new breakthrough points especially in situations with constraints or uncertainty.” This mindset is especially relevant in the personal care category.

While often seen as a routine or everyday segment, Kuan views it differently: as a space where consumer expectations are rapidly evolving. Today’s products are no longer just functional—they reflect lifestyle, personal preferences, and identity. Recognizing this shift allows her to position the category not just as a necessity, but as an opportunity to deliver more meaningful value to customers.

Navigating the Taiwan market: Insight meets execution

Operating in Taiwan brings its own level of complexity. Consumers are highly informed, detail-oriented, and increasingly selective. They expect both strong value for money and a compelling brand experience.

“Taiwanese consumers are incredibly sophisticated,” Kuan notes. “They don’t just compare prices—they evaluate the story, the experience, and how a product fits into their lives.” This requires a deeper level of market observation and sharper commercial judgment.

For Kuan, success comes from understanding not only what customers buy but why they buy. It also means ensuring that Coupang delivers on its promise: offering customers access to the best products from around the world, in a way that truly resonates with local expectations.

Advice for future builders: Growth through action

For professionals considering a career at Coupang—or any high-growth environment—Kuan emphasizes one key mindset: Don’t wait for everything to be perfect.

“In a fast-moving environment, execution and adaptability matter more than perfect planning,” she explains. “You learn by doing, and you grow by continuously challenging yourself.” She encourages others to embrace uncertainty and actively seek out difficult challenges.

Because in those moments—when the path isn’t clearly defined—you develop the ability to think independently, act decisively, and create impact. “At Coupang, speed itself is a strategy,” Kuan says. “And ultimately, your growth is defined by how you respond to that speed.”
