I joined Coupang's Seattle office as a Staff Software Engineer in early 2024, where my initial focus was helping build our next-generation inventory system to support the next stage of Coupang's growth.
Since then, I've had the opportunity to work on challenging distributed systems problems, experience the flexibility of our engineering culture, and contribute to continuous innovation.
Solving High Concurrency and Engineering Depth
Handling millions of daily orders across our fulfillment network requires highly resilient back-end systems. To manage extreme concurrent workloads and build a highly reliable inventory ledger, our team introduced new infrastructure paradigms, including an Agentic AI platform and event-sourced systems.
Working on this core infrastructure led to two patent applications:
SQL-to-NoSQL Inventory Migration – A paradigm designed to safely migrate critical inventory IDs from legacy SQL-based systems to highly scalable NoSQL architectures without disrupting live operations.
Dependency and Resource-Aware Node Health Framework – A system designed to track machine health across our service clusters, ensuring high availability and efficient cluster management.
One of the aspects I value most about working at Coupang is the technical depth of our engineering discussions. Engineers are encouraged to challenge assumptions, evaluate alternative approaches, and make decisions with long-term scalability, reliability, and maintainability in mind.
Team Flexibility and Moving Closer to Data Science
After helping establish the foundation of our inventory system, I was ready to take on a different set of engineering challenges and work more closely with the data science domain. One of the aspects I value most about Coupang is its internal mobility, which made that transition possible without leaving the company.
Today, I develop microservices that serve optimization models. One of the major initiatives our team has been working on is a multi-tenant digital twin simulation architecture. My work focuses on designing distributed services that enable multiple concurrent experiments at scale, allowing us to safely evaluate fulfillment strategies before deployment.
To support this architecture, our team also developed solutions to handle the significant traffic spikes that occur when large-scale simulation workloads are launched simultaneously, ensuring the system remains scalable and reliable.
Practical AI and Continuous Innovation
Innovation has been a consistent focus throughout my career, but what has impressed me most since joining Coupang is how quickly engineers are empowered to make an impact.
Since joining the company in early 2024, I've had the opportunity to contribute to two patent applications with my teammates, with several more ideas currently in development. That experience reflects a culture where engineers are trusted to take ownership, innovate, and turn ideas into reality from day one.
Throughout my career, I've been named as an inventor on more than 25 patent filings, and I'm excited to continue building on that experience at Coupang.
We're also focused on adopting AI pragmatically across our engineering lifecycle. Rather than simply building AI-powered products, we use AI internally to accelerate software development, refine project specifications, improve technical documentation, and streamline operational on-call reviews. This allows us to improve engineering productivity while ensuring that critical decisions continue to be guided by human judgment.
Global Collaboration and What's Next
Because our fulfillment and warehouse technology supports operations across multiple regions, I regularly collaborate with engineering teams across the world including the United States, Korea, and India. Working across time zones and engineering cultures provides valuable opportunities to exchange architectural ideas, learn from different perspectives, and deliver impactful solutions more effectively.
Looking ahead, I hope to continue leading large-scale distributed systems initiatives while contributing to our engineering community. I'm particularly excited to mentor interns and new engineers, while remaining hands-on at the intersection of software engineering, machine learning, and data science.
