Could you introduce yourself and share your journey to becoming a Principal Engineer at Coupang?
My name is Nikhilesh, and I am currently a Principal Engineer in the Global Operations Technology organization, specifically focusing on Fulfillment Technology at Coupang. I oversee the design and development of systems, leading a team of engineers and collaborating with cross-functional teams. Previously, I spent 12 years at a leading global tech company in the U.S., where I played a key role in building and scaling logistics systems, helping the company transition from third-party logistics carriers to their own. This experience gave me deep expertise in scalable, flexible solutions for operations, which I now bring to my work at Coupang, driving the growth and success of Global Operations.
What motivated you to transition from working in the U.S. to joining Coupang in Korea? What unique opportunities did Coupang offer that influenced your decision?
The decision to make the transition was driven by a deep desire to be part of something truly transformative. Coupang’s rapid growth and its bold, innovative approach to commerce presented an exciting opportunity to contribute to a fast-paced, high-impact environment. I was particularly attracted to the chance to lead the development of advanced technology in a market with distinct logistical challenges. How do you balance your role as a technical leader with being hands-on in engineering work as an individual contributor?
Balancing leadership with hands-on engineering work requires a few key strategies and effective time management. I allocate specific periods for leadership responsibilities, hands-on tasks, and monitoring operational issues. I also focus on delegation, empowering my team to take ownership of projects while providing guidance and support. By staying involved in technical discussions, code reviews, and operational challenges, I can maintain a deep understanding of the engineering and operational aspects of our work. This ensures I can lead by example, stay connected with the technical and operational facets, and continue to drive innovation within the team.
How do you influence decisions as an individual contributor?
