Meet Gowri, Director of Engineering with Global Operations Technology

Could you introduce yourself and the team you lead?  

I am Gowri Krishnan, Director of Engineering at Coupang. I am an engineering leader in craft with over 15 years of experience in applying technology and data to enable product and business process innovation. At Coupang, I lead the data and engineering optimizations for Picking Operations across all Fulfillment Centers. 

 

What are some of the most rewarding aspects of your role?    

My role at Coupang is both challenging and fulfilling. Some of the most rewarding aspects of my role are tackling advanced technical challenges and solving complex business problems, designing scalable architecture to support growth and efficiency —  seeing the solutions come to life at scale. It is deeply satisfying to align technical strategy with business goals, coach and grow team members, and work with stakeholders to build great products that positively impact customers. 

 

What makes Coupang unique in supporting engineering excellence?    

At Coupang, the primary focus for engineering is on long-term technical craftsmanship while moving with high urgency. Every quarter, there is increased investment to improve developer productivity by allocating time for tech-debt reduction and refactoring, using high-quality internal platforms and tools to enforce high engineering standards for code reviews, testing, and observability. Security and reliability remain a top priority for all the engineering teams across Coupang.  

 

What is your vision for the future of engineering at Coupang?    

My vision for the future of engineering at Coupang is to build data and science-driven world-class high-performant fulfillment systems that support scale, resilience, and efficiency. It is built on the foundational principle of leveraging technology as an accelerator for product delivery and enhanced customer experience. To build a truly world-class fulfillment and optimization system, it is ideal to develop technical architectures that provide modularity and extensibility with integrated intelligence and automation to reduce operational burden. My focus is to create an engineering organization that focuses on building smart optimization systems that are both cost-effective and futuristic.  

 

Can you share your goals for the team you are leading? 

The solutions and products built by my team are used across all Coupang Fulfillment Centers by the operators and fulfillment center managers regularly. The primary goal for my team is to improve operational productivity and experience by developing smart optimization solutions. Scalability, low latency, and high throughput and performance are the other key objectives for my team. We prioritize building and developing systems that can handle increased scale and workload, optimized for resource and cost efficiency while remaining futureproof.
