Could you start by telling us about yourself?
Hello, I’m Piyush. Currently, I serve as the Director of Engineering at Coupang. With over 13 years of experience, I’ve led and designed software projects across diverse domains such as e-commerce and digital payments. Before joining Coupang, I was part of a renowned Indian e-commerce company, where I built a stellar technology team and launched multiple new products and categories. As a central team owner, I developed the central search and A/B testing tools from the ground up. My experience also includes working with startups in both B2B and B2C sectors.
At Coupang, I’m focused on driving technology leadership in Labor Force Management for our Taiwan business, fostering innovation, and building high-performing engineering teams. The primary reason I joined Coupang was the alignment I felt with the leadership principles and values presented during my interview. “Wow the Customer,” “Ruthless Prioritization,” and “Dive Deep” truly resonate with my way of working. I was particularly impressed by the emphasis placed on each principle, which provided insight into the caliber of individuals I’d be collaborating with.
What are the most exciting initiatives you are working on at Coupang?
As Coupang expanded into the new market, Taiwan, we are prioritizing globalization and compliance across the marketplace. One of our key initiatives involves developing systems that can be easily customized for different regions with minimal effort. Within the Labor force Management System, we’re leading initiatives focused on AI-driven workforce optimization and automation, particularly in schedule management for our fulfillment center staff. This is a promising opportunity that has the potential to revolutionize how we manage our workforce.
What aspects of your role are you most excited about professionally?
I’m genuinely excited about Coupang’s steadfast dedication to pushing the boundaries of what’s achievable in engineering. The culture here promotes continuous learning and innovation, which aligns seamlessly with my belief that a robust engineering team is the foundation of any successful, technology-driven company. We’re developing systems from scratch, reforming them, and identifying features that should be launched while ensuring minimal changes.
Our strong sense of ownership, not only for my pocket but for the entire company’s mission creates an environment where we can grow as individuals and as a diverse team. I envision my career evolving toward greater leadership roles, where I can leverage my engineering expertise to drive innovation and operational excellence at scale.
