As we continue expanding our India Dev Center, we’re thrilled to welcome Sunil, a seasoned technology leader, who recently joined us within the Global Operations Technology organization. Sunil brings with him over two decades of experience across e-commerce, media, ed-tech, and telecom industries. With a strong track record in leading global engineering teams, he now spearheads product development across Korea and India for Coupang’s Global Transportation Systems.
We sat down with Sunil to understand his journey, what excites him about Coupang, and his message for India’s engineering talent.
Could you introduce yourself?
With an extensive career spanning more than two decades in software technology and product roles, I’ve been fortunate to lead and scale tech teams across various industries — e-commerce, media, telecom, and ed-tech. For the past 15 years, I’ve held leadership positions managing global teams. Before this, I was serving as VP and CTO in other companies. What attracted me to Coupang was the chance to innovate at scale—and at speed. You’re solving a zero-to-one problem in one area, while figuring out how to scale 100x in another. That kind of duality is rare and extremely exciting as a leader. It presents a spectrum of complex and rewarding challenges.
At Coupang, I lead engineering teams in Korea and India focused on Global Transportation Systems. We’re building exceptional products that ensure our customers can choose from the largest selection and receive their orders within the promised timeframe. Simultaneously, we empower our operations teams with technology for shipment planning, execution, visibility, and exception management across our global logistics network.
What unique opportunities at Coupang inspired you to join the company?
The domain itself — transportation and logistics — is central to our operations and to wowing our customers. It’s an area rich with innovation potential. But what truly stood out was the opportunity to work with highly talented, customer-obsessed leaders and teams.
Another surprise? Coupang is one of the most prolific patent submitters. It’s a culture of constant innovation backed by real execution.
At Coupang, we are excellent at breaking our long-term vision in bite-sized, focused OKRs — and then executing them with precision and quality. We don’t wait till we know everything; we iterate fast by getting products in front of customers quickly.
Engineers are empowered to take technology decisions and raise the bar with every change. That’s a great environment for passionate engineers to grow.
Could you share some key initiatives your teams are working on in the transportation domain?
We’re currently driving a couple of large initiatives that will power the next generation of Coupang’s transportation network. First, we are reimagining the shipping, network, and execution layers. This isn’t just about solving for known business use cases—it’s about creating an architecture that is extensible enough to support future use cases as well. It requires problem-solving, aiming high, and thinking systematically.
Second, while working on the former, we’re also enhancing foundational services such as address management, routing, and customer delivery preferences—all critical for improving customer experience. Needless to say, we are leveraging cutting-edge technologies, including machine learning and large language models (LLMs), to build these solutions.
What advice would you give to aspiring engineers who are hesitant to join the India Dev Center?
To be honest, they might be missing out on one of the most exciting opportunities available in India today.
At Coupang, you work on real-world, large-scale engineering challenges that are typically seen only at major global tech companies. What’s unique is that you can rapidly build and test new ideas, while simultaneously thinking about how to scale existing features.
We’re building highly available, scalable, global, and multi-tenanted services — which is a complex problem.
