Meet YunYun — Principal Brand Management of the Coupang Taiwan Retail team

Hi YunYun, could you please introduce yourself and your team. 

Hello, my name is YunYun. I’m a Principal Brand Management for the Coupang Taiwan Retail organization. I joined Coupang 3 and half years ago. I currently work within the Baby category. 

 

We’re curious to hear more about your journey to Coupang. What attracted you the most?  

When I joined Coupang I was at a point where my previous work experiences felt monotonous, I always worked within the online commerce field, but I was no longer challenged. 

My personality is one of enjoying new challenges and taking on new things. Throughout my career I have always wanted to elevate myself, and to go to more international companies. I previously worked for Japanese and Singaporean companies when they first launched in Taiwan, where I got to learn about more global experiences. When I heard about Coupang coming to Taiwan, I saw it as a great opportunity to work for a global company within commerce. 

I have personally seen the growth of Retail team since I joined over 3 years ago. From the beginning, we built the teams from scratch, put in place processes to reach out to vendors, get quotes and work through the initial phases of selection. Our teams had to strongly collaborate internally to make this happen, we also had help from the teams globally, which helped us grow to our current scale. As our teams grew, the number of products we are now offering also grew exponentially.  

 

What capabilities are essential for Coupang's Brand Management Team? 

First, problem solving is essential. Coupang is different from other online commerce retailers in an operations standpoint, we work differently from what the Taiwan market is used to. This has brought us some challenges during negotiation where we used to be told “that’s not how things are done” by vendors and our teams had to meet them half-way and strike a balance. As a Brand Manager at Coupang, thinking on your feet is key to problem-solving. 

Second, thinking outside the box is key. As a Brand Manager, if we rely on past experiences, we risk getting stuck in mental blocks and limit yourselves. You have to think outside the box and be open-minded to explore all the possibilities. 

 

How are you maintaining work-life balance at Coupang? 

At Coupang, we have lots of freedom in our work hours due to the flexible work hours. I can communicate with my supervisors and as long as I complete my tasks and projects by their deadlines, I can be flexible with my free time. As a working-mom, this ensures that I can be both present at home with my children, while continuing to grow my career. 

 

Could you share more about being a working-mom at Coupang and what you have witnessed of our female employees continuously engaging in the future of commerce and growing their careers?  

Coupang is a global company where all employees are at an equal footing. For working mothers, here in Taiwan, society often expects moms to stay at home and take care of their family. At Coupang, you have the opportunity to do both, you can grow your career while maintaining work-life balance to spend time with your family when needed.
