For the past decade, my career was rooted in Taiwan’s offline retail industry. I gained experience across convenience stores, Taiwan’s largest beauty retailer, and the leading pet retail chain. This foundation shaped my commercial understanding and strengthened my expertise in merchandising and supplier management.
As time went on, I started thinking about the next step in my career. I asked myself three key questions — whether I could move from offline retail to online, whether I could grow beyond the local market by joining a global organization, and whether I could explore roles beyond traditional purchasing.
While I was exploring global opportunities, Coupang approached me. Through the interview process, I realized that Coupang offered exactly the direction I was looking for — a transition to e-commerce, a global environment, and the chance to collaborate with talented people from around the world.
High Impact Responsibilities from Day One
When I joined Coupang, I was immediately given a major responsibility leading direct negotiations at a time when many suppliers in Taiwan were still unfamiliar with Coupang’s model. To succeed, I made sure I fully understood our business model and value proposition, along with how we differ from other retailers.
By approaching conversations from the supplier’s point of view and focusing on value, scale, and long-term partnership, I secured key home & personal care goods brand partnerships within my first three months. This early achievement led me to take part in larger strategic initiatives, including building major supply sources during a period when many suppliers were not yet ready to work directly with Coupang Taiwan.
Beyond the Standard Playbook
Initially, the approach considered traditional sourcing methods. Leveraging prior experience, I proposed an alternative strategy focused on building closer partnerships with key retail players.
This evolved into a more comprehensive collaboration framework designed to enhance customer convenience and operational efficiency. The outcome delivered improved value and strengthened overall product availability.
Professional Growth Beyond What I Experienced Before
During my time at Coupang, I have grown faster and more deeply than ever before. The scale, pace, and complexity of the work require deeper thinking, faster execution, and more creative problem solving.
I have strengthened my analytical abilities, my capacity to think beyond conventional frameworks, and my drive to take ownership and solve challenges with urgency.
This environment has pushed me to grow in ways I never encountered in my previous ten years in retail. The work brings demanding problems and rapid changes, and while challenges can be intense, the breakthroughs that follow are meaningful and motivating.
