Coupang Eats designers are actively growing their careers in various ways that suit their career paths. This is not limited to junior designers but extends to seasoned design leads who are exploring new design innovations. With Coupang Eats’ rapid growth, new opportunities and challenges continue to unfold for designers.

We sat down with Steve, who joined as an individual contributor but grew into a team leader.

Hi Steve, please introduce yourself.

Hello, I am Steve. I lead the Merchant UX team at Coupang Eats. Our core focus lies in crafting diverse user journeys, ranging from the initial onboarding processes for food merchants utilizing apps to the comprehensive management of stores, menu customization, promotional strategies, and efficient order processing. Our overarching objective revolves around expanding the array of available stores and menu options for customers, thereby empowering merchants to offer their culinary offerings more effectively. This effort is pivotal in driving Coupang Eats business endeavors and its growth. Much like other design teams at Coupang Eats, the Merchant UX team diligently identifies potential challenges that merchants face and opportunities through user interviews and testing, subsequently implementing a myriad of solutions to foster business expansion.

My previous professional journey includes invaluable experience gained at a social networking service company in the U.S., where I honed various strategies and design processes aimed at growing user numbers. Eager to apply these insights to a new canvas, I enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to join Coupang Eats. Not only do we embody the promise of rapid growth under the formidable brand of Coupang brand, but also the perfect balance between challenge and growth. Recently, I transitioned from an individual contributor, responsible for hands-on tasks, to a team leader.

Could you please share how the experience of transitioning to a team leader has contributed to your personal growth?

Transitioning from an individual contributor to a team leader has enriched my capacity to perceive matters from a holistic viewpoint encompassing a company-wide perspective. The discourse in our leadership and management meetings is meticulously geared towards aligning our design endeavors with overarching business objectives. This process affords me ample opportunities to develop design strategies while also assuming a pivotal role in managing the design process as a team leader. Teams equipped with well-established processes consistently deliver high-quality design outcomes across a myriad of requirements, continually refining and enhancing the process through iterative improvements. The essence of a design process lies in its flexibility and adaptability to diverse scenarios or projects. For instance, last year our team improved our systems to track the progress of projects and key design outcomes accessible for all teams.

Please introduce one of the design initiatives that is memorable.

The redesign project for the point of sale (POS) order-receiving app used by merchants is particularly memorable, as it was one of the key concepts I proposed upon joining the team. We focused on enhancing the experience of merchants who rely on the POS app for their business every day. Efforts were directed towards reducing the time it took for Coupang Eats’ merchants to familiarize themselves with new features and revamping the overall design layout to accommodate additional functionality. Many merchants seamlessly embraced the new design without significant difficulty, and the key metrics we aimed to improve showed noticeable improvements.

What is the culture like within the Merchant UX team that drives such changes?

While the Merchant UX team may be modest in scale, we prioritize autonomous decision-making and  the expertise of each individual designer. Once ownership of a project is established, designers collaborate harmoniously, pooling diverse perspectives and coordinating decision-making to ensure project success. While collaborative efforts yield commendable results, I firmly believe that clear ownership catalyzes efficiency within the design process.

At Coupang Eats, we foster a culture that respects the expertise of each individual designer while also emphasizing close collaboration among team members, creating an environment for continuous growth.
