Hi Johnson, nice to meet you. Please introduce yourself.

Hi, I’m Johnson, currently working as the Senior EHS Manager at Coupang’s fulfillment center. My key responsibility is to manage environmental, safety, and health-related issues across the entire fulfillment center. This year, my goal is to lead the team in building a strong safety culture from all angles, ensuring that every employee who enters the facility is influenced by our safety values and is motivated to follow the guidelines, creating a safe working environment for everyone.

We’re curious to hear more about your journey to Coupang. What attracted you the most?

I joined Coupang in April 2022, at a time when Coupang had not yet launched its Rocket Delivery service in Taiwan. I saw the opportunity to participate in building systems in such a large-scale company as a rare chance. After joining, I experienced firsthand that the term “rocket” doesn’t only apply to fast delivery but also to the rapid growth of the business. I’m glad to have witnessed and been a part of this journey.

What I appreciate most after joining Coupang is the company’s focus on safety. Our employees at fulfillment centers come from various companies, and many have not had sufficient exposure to a strong safety culture in their previous work experiences. This gives us a great opportunity to work together with them to learn about safety. Coupang is willing to invest in good equipment and supplies for employees, ensuring they can work comfortably and safely. Starting with people is the key to changing their mindset and encouraging them to change their behavior for safety’s sake.

What capabilities are essential for Coupang's EHS Manager ?

I really like the Leadership Principles “Aim high and find a way” and “Wow the Customer.” As part of the EHS department, I see my “customers” as anyone who enters the facility. Our goal is to make them feel, “Wow! I want to keep working at Coupang’s fulfillment centers.” This may sound like a vision, but I believe an EHS Manager in a fulfillment center must be confident that the team can achieve this. It’s important to consistently give the team confidence, help them overcome operational challenges, and ensure their morale is not dampened by thinking our safety standards are unattainable. I’ve found that when the goal is set at “Wow the customer,” our solutions go beyond just making improvements—they need to be real, effective improvements that make employees exclaim, “Coupang is serious about this.”

Congratulations on your latest promotion. Tell us about your latest achievements.

Throughout this process, I’ve worked hard to fulfill the role of what I believe an EHS Manager should be: “the final line of defense for safety.” I constantly remind myself that all EHS-related matters must be detected and addressed as soon as they reach me. I aim to establish the image that EHS does not easily compromise on any safety concerns and, in the process of not compromising, strives to help everyone complete their work safely.

One of my latest achievements is the successful launch of TAO3, guiding it safely from the construction phase through the mixed operational and construction period. We were able to ship more than expected during the 2023 double 11 event, and after the construction contractors left, we established the site’s safety culture and guidelines. I’m happy to have earned the company’s recognition and hope to pass this spirit on to the entire team, so we can further upgrade our safety defenses.

Sounds like you are proud of the work you do and the impact it leaves on our world. What helped you the most in discovering your potential at Coupang?

I believe that the company’s safety culture and the trust from my supervisors have helped me the most. When working on the front lines with operations, facility management teams, vendors, or employees, it’s inevitable that we have to explain our safety guidelines. However, I’m well aware of the company’s safety culture and the stance of my supervisors, which always prioritize safety first. At Coupang, I often share with my team, “You are never wrong to do the right thing.” . I feel very lucky to have joined a company with such a safety culture, which allows our safety values to be truly implemented.
