James is head of litigation and investigations at Coupang Taiwan, recently joining the company with wide experience as a prosecutor and adjunct professor of law. He is based in Taipei City and describes Coupang “as a great place to grow.”
Hello, James. Can you tell us about your role at Coupang and how long you have been with the company?
I am a Senior Director in the Legal and Security Department, and I joined Coupang in March. My team at Coupang Taiwan handles litigation matters, including both civil and criminal disputes, as well as investigations. We are also responsible for corporate legal matters such as investments, loan agreements, and more.
What were your first impressions of Coupang, and why do you recommend the company to others who are considering a career with us?
My first impression of Coupang was that it offers a diverse and dynamic work environment. The organization and strategies adapt quickly, which makes it an ideal place for those who are eager to learn and embrace change. I highly recommend Coupang as a great place to grow professionally.
As your team expands, what skills and experience are you looking for?
As our legal department continues to grow in response to the company’s rapid expansion, we are looking for legal professionals with relevant practical experience. More importantly, we value individuals who approach their work with a holistic view of the company and embody our 15 Leadership Principles, such as striving to “WOW the customer.”
What is work life like at Coupang and what is the key to flourishing here?
Coupang’s work environment is very different from traditional companies – it’s far from monotonous. We enjoy flexible working hours and open communication among colleagues. I believe the key to flourishing at Coupang is maintaining a fast-paced yet flexible rhythm, while staying closely connected with the team.
What about your team and its accomplishments make you the proudest?
I’m proud to lead a team of highly experienced legal professionals. Many of them have worked at top-tier law firms and large publicly listed companies. Our litigation and investigation team is dedicated to resolving disputes effectively and protecting the rights of both the company and our employees.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career with Coupang?
Stay curious and keep learning. That’s my sincere advice to anyone considering a career at Coupang or joining our team.
