Connecting every step of the food delivery journey through technology

Since its launch in 2019, Coupang Eats has redefined food delivery with standout services such as free delivery and single-order dispatch. By offering customers a broad selection and a fast,   reliable delivery experience, Coupang Eats continues to set new standards in customer satisfaction. 

At the core of this success is the Coupang Eats Tech organization. We spoke with PD and Braum, who lead engineering at Coupang Eats, to learn more about the team’s technology, culture, and vision. 

Could you please introduce yourselves? 

PD: Hello, I’m PD, the Lead of the Front-end Engineering Team at Coupang Eats. 
At Coupang Eats, we develop mobile and web services across various domains to deliver the best possible customer experience throughout the entire journey — from placing an order to final delivery. Our team is responsible for designing and developing all app and web-based products within Coupang Eats. 

Braum: I’m Braum, the iOS Tech Lead at Coupang Eats. I oversee the quality and performance of our customer-facing mobile applications and lead the development of new features to ensure a seamless customer experience. 

What motivated you to join Coupang Eats? 

PD: When choosing a company, I always consider three key factors: the company’s growth potential, my own professional development, and the value I can contribute. Coupang Eats met all three criteria. I was especially drawn to its goal-oriented culture and the agility of its decision-making processes. 

Braum: While working on an app in my previous company, I had the chance to benchmark Coupang.  I was genuinely impressed by its technical sophistication and ability to execute at scale. That experience sparked my interest, and after joining the company, I immersed myself in a range of projects that ultimately led me to my current role as a tech lead at Coupang Eats. 

What are your responsibilities as a team leader and tech lead? 

PD: As the leader of the front-end engineering team, I focus on aligning our work closely with Coupang Eats’ business objectives to drive tangible growth. I collaborate extensively with other teams, establish mid- to long-term roadmaps based on key initiatives, and work toward achieving them. 
A critical part of this mission is fostering a culture that supports continuous learning and skill development among team members. 

Braum: While I previously focused on individual contributions, my current role involves guiding the team’s direction and capabilities. My primary responsibility is to empower team members, foster collective growth, and help the organization move forward effectively. 

How is the tech team at Coupang Eats structured and operated? 

PD: Our tech organization includes mobile, front-end, and back-end engineers, QA engineers, data scientists, and product managers. Coupang Eats is structured around three service areas — customer, restaurant, and delivery — each with tailored app functionalities and user experiences. 
Our teams are structured by function, such as Product, UX, Engineering, and Business Analysis. But we operate through cross-functional, goal-oriented scrum teams that focus on delivering specific business or engineering outcomes. 

Braum: Under the shared goal of “Coupang Eats’ success,” our teams collaborate autonomously and organically. We consider not only technical decisions but also the end-to-end customer experience during development. 

What sets the Coupang Eats tech team apart from others? 

PD: One of our greatest strengths is the opportunity for engineers to grow by working across a diverse range of domains. Because our systems are deeply integrated with the broader Coupang ecosystem, team members gain a comprehensive understanding of how different services connect and operate. The variety and complexity of the challenges we tackle make this an exceptional environment for professional and technical growth. 

Braum: Since all services converge through the mobile app, understanding the customer, store, and delivery applications gives us a complete view of the customer journey — from placing an order to receiving it. This holistic perspective allows us to design with precision. Our team collaborates closely, grounded in a deep understanding of both the technology and the business. 

You were part of the Coupang Eats launch. Could you share that experience? 

Braum: We built the prototype in one month and launched the official app within six. I still vividly remember the excitement of our very first successful order — our team gathered at the Jamsil office and celebrated with our order. Watching that early version evolve into a service that now powers countless customer orders has been incredibly rewarding and a true testament to the team's dedication and agility. 

What are your goals for the future at Coupang Eats? 

PD: Our mission is to build a mobile technology environment that is both stable and sustainable. Delivering a reliable app experience in a real-time delivery service is no small feat — it requires constant investment in technical innovation and architectural refinement. 
Since the launch of Coupang Eats, I’ve grown alongside the business. As we continue to scale rapidly, I’m excited to take on increasingly complex challenges and grow together with my team. 

Braum: My goal is to help our growing organization strike the right balance between stability and productivity. I’m committed to supporting that growth while continuing to learn, contribute, and be the kind of team member others can rely on. Working alongside such talented colleagues motivates me to keep evolving every day.
