Hello, my name is James JS. I'm managing the EHS legal team, which is a part of our Coupang Legal team. I joined Coupang last year in May.
What experiences did you have before joining Coupang?
Before starting my legal career, I was actually a doctor at a hospital. After completing my family medicine resident course at Seoul National University Hospital and getting a family medicine specialist license, I decided to go to law school. Although being a doctor and treating patients is worthwhile, being a legal expert who deals with social systems and contemplates its improvements seemed more attractive to me. I believed at that time that there would be something more that I could contribute to. While working at a law firm, I decided to join Coupang because the company was fascinating. Coupang continuously grows as the mainstay of Korea’s future economy by leading and changing how customers consume and live.
What is the main role the EHS Legal team at Coupang? What kind of projects do you work on?
The EHS Legal team collaborates with various field teams to improve safety and health systems. We also strengthen the safety and health activities in line with changing regulatory environments such as the enforcement of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act. In addition, we are responding to various pending issues by seeking the most efficient and effective solutions while considering specific conditions or situations the company is facing at the time. As a manager, I discuss with various field teams to find the best solutions, lead major projects, and support its progress.
What makes Coupang special in your opinion?
I think Coupang's biggest attraction is that we continue to move forward and grow toward a better future — all to better satisfy our customers without complacency. Coupang has been leading a paradigm shift in the e-commerce market by challenging existing companies. I believe Coupang will further grow and position itself asa major player of the future economy.
What are you looking forward to in your current team?
Unlike some legal teams at other companies, the Legal team at Coupang is not just waiting to review requests. We are constantly communicating with other field teams and thinking about how to take things to the next level and seek the best solutions. I always encourage my team members to actively communicate with other teams, and I believe that every team member can do better.
What kind of profile are you looking for to join your team?
An ideal member of our team will be someone who is not complacent, actively pursues development, and enjoys change.
