How could I not love working at Coupang? — Angela's story of innovating retail at Coupang

For our first story, we’re introducing Angela, a director in Coupang’s retail team, who is helping customers easily buy the processed foods they need.

This interview is part of a series where we meet three Coupang directors who are turning those passions into reality. 

Angela, a Director in Coupang's Retail organization, plays a crucial role in ensuring that customers always have access to essential processed food.  

 

Hello, Angela. Could you introduce yourself? 

Hello, I'm Angela. I work as the Director of the Retail Organization at Coupang. My team is responsible for efficiently managing and securing inventory of processed foods such as instant rice, noodles, beverages, vitamins, baby food, and snacks, ensuring that customers can easily purchase them anytime through the Coupang app. 

 

What do you find most rewarding about your role? 

I’m proud to be part of Coupang, where we’re at the forefront of retail innovation. People often believed that getting great prices meant sacrificing convenience, or that fast delivery came with a higher cost. But at Coupang, we’ve broken the trade-offs. We’ve made it our mission to provide customers with "amazing service with fast delivery," "low prices," and a "vast selection" — all at the same time. We are also committed to helping our suppliers thrive and ensuring that everyone succeeds together. 

What’s even more fulfilling is the work my team does with heavy, bulky products like water and beverages. Knowing that we’re making it easier for customers to have these items delivered right to their doorsteps — without the hassle of carrying them. It’s a true privilege to help make life more convenient for our customers in this way.

 

I understand you haven’t been with Coupang for very long. What stands out to you about the company so far? 

I’ve been with Coupang for less than a year. Coupang’s focus on exceeding customer expectations, expressed in our “Wow the Customer” leadership principle, truly impressed me. This principle is very much embedded in our daily work. Every day, I tackle new challenges to enhance customer satisfaction by collaborating with suppliers and streamlining processes. The growth I’ve experienced here has far surpassed what I had anticipated. 

 

Could you share how you work to improve the customer experience? 

Coupang manages millions of SKUs, ensuring fast delivery and affordable prices for customers. This requires specialized purchasing knowledge, and we source directly from manufacturers and importers to offer a better shopping experience. Additionally, we collaborate with various small and medium-sized enterprises and work closely with sellers to enhance customer satisfaction and provide an even better shopping experience. 

 

You’ve worked abroad before. What made you decide to join Coupang in Korea? 

I moved to Korea specifically to join Coupang. During the interview process, I was genuinely inspired by the company’s vision and customer-centered culture demonstrated by our leadership. The potential for growth here also greatly appealed to me. Since joining, I’ve had many opportunities to learn and grow—more than I expected, honestly. 

What changes or improvements are you working on within your team? 

Coupang operates within a flexible culture, which allows us to explore more in-depth and expansive responsibilities. I’m working to maximize each team member’s strengths by carefully assigning roles and responsibilities and improving our processes. We’re also restructuring to reduce redundant tasks and boost efficiency. With a customer-first approach, I'm committed to creating better experiences for both our customers and suppliers every step of the way.
