Since joining Coupang Taiwan two years ago, Vast has led the Tools & Home Improvement category in a fast-paced environment where speed defines how things get done. At Coupang, ideas move quickly from concept to execution, allowing teams to respond directly to market changes. “The distance between identifying an opportunity and acting on it is incredibly short—and that’s what creates true ownership,” he says.

Delivering what customers depend on

While innovation often suggests new categories or big launches, some of the most meaningful work happens behind the scenes ensuring that essential products are always available.

For Vast, one of the most rewarding experiences has been leading replenishment initiatives for everyday consumables like batteries and garbage bags. These are products customers may not think about often—but when they’re missing, the impact is immediate.

“There’s something very tangible about stabilizing the supply of products people rely on in their daily lives,” he shares. “They might not be the most visible, but they’re critical to maintaining a consistently strong customer experience.”

By focusing on these foundational categories, Vast and his team are helping build trust—ensuring that Coupang delivers not only convenience, but reliability.

What the numbers don’t tell you

In a fast-moving business environment, data informs every decision, but it is individual insight that transforms data into real business impact.

For Vast, the defining capability of a strong Brand Manager is the ability to go beyond surface-level metrics. Instead of simply tracking performance, he emphasizes the importance of asking deeper questions: Why is this happening? What is the customer experiencing? What problem are we really solving?

This ‘deep dive’ mindset influences every aspect of the role from assortment planning to inventory strategy. By understanding not just what is happening, but why, teams are able to make more informed, high-impact decisions that ultimately improve both business outcomes and customer satisfaction.

When customers need it most

The Tools & Home Improvement category presents a unique and often underestimated challenge. As Vast describes it: “You don’t think about it when you don’t need it, but when you do, you don’t know where to buy it.”

In Taiwan, demand in this category is typically infrequent but highly urgent. When customers need these products, they expect immediate solutions. This creates a distinct responsibility: ensuring that the right products are not only available, but also easy to understand and trustworthy to purchase.

Customers in this category look beyond price; they evaluate practicality, durability, and reliability. As a result, Vast and his team place strong emphasis on clear product information, dependable selection, and stable supply chains. These factors together enable customers to make quick decisions with confidence.

One of Vast's categories: Tools

Creating confidence in critical moments

Among the wide range of products in the category, items such as batteries and tools stand out as especially meaningful. These are the products customers turn to when something stops working unexpectedly. In those moments, they need a quick solution they can trust to get things working again.

“For me, the value of this category lies in helping customers solve a problem in one go,” Vast says. “They should be able to come online, find exactly what they need, and feel confident in their purchase.”

Meeting this expectation requires seamless coordination across selection, availability, and execution—ensuring for a reliable and consistent customer experience.

Advice for future builders: Stay flexible, stay curious

For professionals considering a career at Coupang, Vast offers a simple but powerful piece of advice: stay flexible. In an environment where things move quickly and conditions can shift at any time, the ability to adapt becomes a key differentiator. Those who remain open to change, continuously learn, and feel comfortable navigating uncertainty are ultimately the ones who grow the most.

“Things move fast here,” he says. “If you’re willing to adjust and keep learning, you’ll be able to go much further.” This mindset is closely tied to how Coupang operates, where speed is not just about moving quickly, but about making thoughtful decisions and executing with purpose. It enables stronger ownership and ultimately drives better outcomes for customers.

For Vast, this impact is most visible in everyday moments when customers can find exactly what they need, right when they need it. By focusing on the details that matter, even in categories that often go unnoticed, he is helping build a more reliable and trusted shopping experience for customers across Taiwan.
