Staff Data Scientist (Operations Research)

Description

Company Introduction:

Coupang is reimagining the shopping experience with the goal of wowing each customer from the instant they open the Coupang app to the moment an order is delivered to their door.

Our services in Taiwan include “Rocket Delivery” which offers next-day delivery for a wide selection of items at affordable prices, “Rocket Oversea” which offers free international delivery on millions of best-selling products from Korea, the U.S., and beyond.

We are looking for talents to help us lead Coupang’s expansion in Taiwan. This is an exceptional opportunity to become a part of Coupang’s growth in Taiwan and create a world where our customers wonder, “How did I ever live without Coupang?”

Role Overview:

We're looking for a highly motivated Staff Data Scientist (Operations Research) to join our dynamic supply chain management technology team. This role is perfect for someone with a strong passion for applied research, advanced analytics, and the strategic application of Operations Research (OR) to solve complex, real-world problems. You'll collaborate extensively with product, engineering, business, and operations teams to tackle the most challenging issues in supply chain optimization, including procurement optimization, inventory distribution, inventory reallocation, and network design. The ideal candidate will thrive in an interdisciplinary environment, adept at developing novel OR models and algorithms from inception or enhancing existing solutions for production deployment. You'll play a pivotal role in shaping and executing the vision for intelligent automation and optimization within our global supply chain.

What You Will Do:

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including product, engineering, and business, to identify opportunities for improvement and translate ambiguous business requirements into practical, actionable optimization solutions.

  • Conduct comprehensive research and analysis to inform OR model development, establishing clear metrics and success criteria for evaluating solution effectiveness.

  • Design and implement data-driven solutions that support automated decision-making at scale. You'll leverage advanced Operations Research techniques (e.g., mathematical programming, simulation, heuristics) to optimize business processes.

  • Analyze and solve complex data problems using innovative methods. You'll communicate your findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders through clear and concise reports and presentations.

  • Provide post-launch analysis for deployed solutions to quantify their real-world outcomes, identifying areas for continuous improvement and future development opportunities for our optimization models.

Basic Qualifications

  • A Master's or Ph.D. degree in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or another quantitative discipline, along with 5+ years of relevant experience in industry or academia.

  • Strong hands-on experience with core Operations Research methodologies (e.g., linear programming, integer programming, mixed-integer programming, network flow optimization, simulation, queuing theory).

  • Proficiency in at least one optimization solver/library (e.g., Gurobi, CPLEX, OR-Tools, PuLP, SciPy optimize) and demonstrated experience in Python, SQL, and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).

  • Solid critical thinking skills and the ability to solve ambiguous problems, supported by a strong foundation in quantitative methods and problem formulation. Proven experience translating complex business challenges into structured OR models.

  • The ability to conduct independent analysis for a business problem, encompassing data manipulation, hypothesis formulation, experiment design, and statistical analysis.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively engage with technical and business stakeholders at all levels, including strong presentation development and delivery abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing and implementing large-scale optimization solutions for complex business problems in a production environment.

  • Expertise in developing and deploying advanced OR algorithms, including decomposition methods, heuristics/metaheuristics, and hybrid approaches.

  • Strong ability to model ambiguous business and operational problems at the appropriate level of abstraction, with a consistent focus on delivering practical, impactful solutions.

  • Familiarity with the Big Data ecosystem (e.g., Spark, Hive) and SQL/NoSQL databases for handling complex data transformations and analysis.

  • A deep understanding of the e-commerce business domain and the ability to apply cutting-edge quantitative models into production environments, driving measurable results.

Recruitment Process

  • Application Review - Phone Interview - Onsite (or Virtual Onsite) Interview – Offer
  • The exact nature of the recruitment process may vary according to the specific job and may be changed due to scheduling or other circumstances.
  • Interview schedules and the results will be informed to the applicant via the e-mail address submitted at the application stage.
