Senior Director Fashion Buying and Planning

Role Overview

Coupang seeks an energetic, experienced and highly motivated individual, whose primary role will be overseeing the Buying and Planning activities within our expanding Fashion Category.

The successful candidate will play a key role in creating a financially sustainable and rapidly growing business, bringing leadership to selection/brand expansion, seasonal buying, inventory management and supplier negotiations amongst other critical business activities across these functions. The successful individual will be a seasoned people leader whose KPIs will include revenue growth, supplier terms improvement, profitability, inventory health, and seasonal buying accuracy. In addition, the Director of Buying and Planning will be comfortable operating at minute levels of detail as well as building a long-term vision for the business, all whilst moving at lightning speed.


Roles and Responsibilities

  • Partner with VP, Fashion to innovate and scale up the Fashion business continuing our mission to ‘wow’ our customers, with the aim of significantly growing our business.
  • Onboard global and local fashion brands relevant to customers.
  • Provide strategic vision for the Buying and Planning team.
  • Set the parameters, provide guidance and deliver results on selection/brand addition, seasonal buying, financial planning, inventory health and vendor negotiations.
  • Drive systematic improvements as well as champion new opportunities to grow the business and wow customers.
  • Hire a world-class world class Buying and Planning team, cultivate future leaders who can launch, develop, and run new businesses.
  • Innovate to solve complex problems, use trends and competitive analysis to define and implement long term business strategies.
  • You will collaborate and strong partnership with Fashion Buying Team, Fashion Planning Team, Retail Fashion Leadership Team, and Corporate Functions

Category Management

  • Analyze data or insights to determine industry and consumer trends.
  • Devise long-term strategies for all Fashion product categories.
  • Foster trusting relationships with vendors, negotiate greater investment in our business and better quality of service.
  • Liaise with Marketing teams to determine competitive pricing and promotional activities of a product category.
  • Lead product category expansion.
  • Assume P&L responsibility and create long term shareholder value.

Business Development

  • Pursue and close new brand partnership opportunities, licensing deals and related business growth activities.
  • Lead communication with related departments on product development and strategy.
  • Report and provide feedback to management using relevant performance forecasting data.
  • Execute relevant business deals and deliver significant financial impact.

Strategic Planning

  • Monitor changes to the retail environment and consistently develop renewed strategies for goal achievement.
  • Establish response strategy to identify customer need and ‘wow’ the customer with creative propositions.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and implement measures.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, management, marketing, supply chain or other related subject (e.g. fashion).
  • Relevant other professional qualifications an advantage.
  • 10+ years’ experience in category roles, Fashion industry experience a plus.
  • Sound knowledge of category management, sales and marketing principles with string financial acumen.
  • Time spent in fast-paced e-commerce environments a plus.
  • Experience managing or closely collaborating with multi-functional teams covering areas such as sourcing, buying, merchandising, inventory management, supply chain.
  • Analytical, strong ability to dive deep and stay connected to details while retaining a company-wide perspective.
  • Ability to reach consensus between teams with goals which are frequently in tension.
  • History of successfully leading teams to deliver outstanding results, in high growth, fast-paced environments.

Document Return Policy

  • This notification is given pursuant to Article 11 (6) of the Fair Hiring Procedure Act.
  • A job applicant, who has applied but not been finally selected for a position at Coupang (the “Company”), may request the Company to return his/her hiring documents submitted pursuant to the Fair Hiring Procedure Act. However, this will not apply where the hiring documents were submitted via the website of the Company or e-mail, or where the job applicant submitted those documents voluntarily without a request from the Company. In addition, if the hiring documents were destroyed due to a natural disaster or any other reasons not attributable to the Company, such documents will be deemed to have been returned to the job applicant.
  • A job applicant who wishes to request the return of his/her hiring documents pursuant to the main sentence of paragraph 2 above should fill out a “Request for Return of Hiring Documents” [Annex Form No. 3 in the Enforcement Rule of the Fair Hiring Procedure Act] and submit the request to the Company by email ( ) In such case, within fourteen (14) days from the date of identifying the receipt of the request, the Company will send the hiring documents to the job applicant’s designated address via registered mail.  Please be informed that the job applicant is required to pay the postage on the registered mail.
  • In preparation for a job applicant’s request for the return of hiring documents pursuant to the main sentence of paragraph 2 above, the Company shall retain the original hiring documents submitted by the job applicant for 180 days from the completion of the recruiting process.  If no request is made until the end of this period, all of his/her hiring documents will be destroyed immediately in accordance with the Personal Information Protection Act.
